Northern Lights Project: Transforming Waste into Valuable Resources

Carbon capture process from household waste incineration

Discover how tech companies like Stripe, Google, and Salesforce are investing in a carbon capture project in Norway to remove CO₂ emissions from burning household waste and convert it into clean energy.

Introduction

A group of technology companies, including Stripe, Google, and Salesforce, has invested nearly $32 million in a carbon capture project in Norway as part of the Northern Lights initiative. The project aims to remove 100,000 metric tons of CO₂ from the atmosphere between 2029 and 2030.

Carbon Capture Process

The project captures CO₂ emissions generated from burning household waste in Oslo to heat the city, storing the CO₂ deep in the North Sea. The waste is separated into fossil and biogenic components, with biogenic waste producing less environmental impact when incinerated. The captured CO₂ is then removed from the atmospheric cycle.

The process also eliminates methane emissions that would result from biogenic waste going to landfills, thus mitigating global warming. Moreover, the CO₂ capture prevents emissions from plastics and other fossil fuels.

Replication and Impact

This carbon capture model can be implemented at up to 500 locations in Europe, potentially removing 400 million tons of CO₂ by 2050. Despite being an emerging and costly technology, pre-purchasing carbon credits aims to fund development and showcase market viability.

Government Support and Green Solutions

With government incentives and high carbon removal credit prices, projects like this offer a promising solution for greenhouse gas reduction.

Conclusion

The project targets the capture of 100,000 tons of CO₂ and the conversion of waste into clean energy, presenting a valuable environmental initiative.
